Chamberlain writes:
This non-commercial work focuses on the service of Portuguese subjects
with the Australian military's Services Reconnaissance Department
(SRD)/Z Special Unit during World War II. The monograph was written to
support submissions (2007-2009) to the Australian Government seeking
recognition for their wartime service - see the Preface and pp.86-87.
It also more briefly relates the story of the more than 600 civilians
- men, women and children, evacuated from Portuguese Timor to
Australia during the War and accommodated mostly at Bob's Farm (about
60km north of Newcastle) and later in northern NSW. The tale of the
28 men unjustly interned (mostly deportados) - including Francisco
Horta (the father of present-day Timor-Leste President José
Ramos-Horta), is also recounted.
Annex A provides "pen pictures" of 122 Portuguese and Timorese
associated with SRD/Z Special Unit during the War. Annex G provides
some discussion on the "native wars" - and their suppression, and
includes reference to the "Native Attitudes" map produced by an
Australian officer. The work is extensively footnoted and includes an
Index - but regrettably most photographs and maps are yet to be
included on the Scribd site (currently a technical issue).
Hard copies of the monograph are in the Australian National Library,
the State Library of Victoria, KITLV (Leiden) - and with several other
libraries and interested academics in Australia and overseas. Copies
are also with the Australian Department of Defence, the Department of
Veterans' Affairs, the Australian War Memorial, The Mary Mackillop
East Timor Centre, the Australian Commando Association, several
Australian parliamentarians, relatives of Timorese veterans etc.
