Although East Timor is often presented as a UN success story, justice for women has deteriorated in post-conflict times, and violence has remained a constant in their lives, despite the existence of UN and donors’ programmes for women and children’s rights. Gender and Transitional Justice uses East Timor as a case study of how women engage in the whole range of transitional mechanisms in a post-conflict state, such as domestic trials, internationalised trials and truth commissions. This book is the first comprehensive feminist analysis of the role of international law in formal transitional justice mechanisms. It reveals the political dynamics in a post-conflict setting around gender and questions of justice, and reframes the meanings of success and failure of international interventions in the light of them.
Dr Sue Harris Rimmer has a BA (Hons)/LLB (Hons) from the University of Queensland and she completed her Doctorate in Juridical Science at ANU in 2008. She has worked in human rights and refugee advocacy with peak bodies in Australia, and was until recently President of the national NGO Australian Lawyers for Human Rights. Senator McMullan will launch her book, and both he and Professor Mathew will offer their own informed views on her approach.
