UK Book Launch & Seminar: Timor-Leste—the politics of gender relations in a post-conflict society

Date: Wednesday 7 Dec 2016 19:00

Location: School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, Paul Webley Wing, SALT, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG
This event marks a significant day in 1975 when Indonesian forces invaded the new nation of Timor-Leste. Today, Timor-Leste is an established nation almost 15 years old but like other conflict-affected nations the people continue to face the effects of war and consequent rapid social change, often significant in the area of gender relations. This seminar will explore themes of gender relations in contemporary Timorese society and mark the release of a new volume on the topic. Two authors from the book will make presentations along with a representative from the Timorese Embassy in London.

This event has been organised in cooperation with the Centre for Gender Studies, the Centre of South East Asian Studies and the Development Studies Department at SOAS.

Speakers
Dr. Sara Niner researcher and lecturer from Monash University, Australia.

Dr. Esther Richards interdisciplinary researcher from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

The event is dedicated to the memory of Anthony Goldstone, a good friend of Timor-Leste.
