[TimorLesteStudies] It’s time for women to lead in Timor-Leste

Few women were seen addressing campaign crowds or depicted in party
political posters in the lead-up to last weekend’s national election in
Timor-Leste, formerly known as East Timor.

A political culture that enshrines male leadership resulted in men’s voices
and images being at the forefront with little focus on women candidates.

The young nation of Timor-Leste, formerly brutally ruled as part of
Indonesia, is hardly alone on this score. And militarized masculinity in
the political culture of Timor-Leste is not surprising given valorization
of male heroes in the long pro-independence insurgency.
