The TLSA an interdisciplinary, international research network focussed on all aspects of research into East Timorese society, including politics and history, economics, communications, health, language, agriculture and science. There will be a special stream on the theme of Peace-building, hosted by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies of the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL), along with a Festschrift panel celebrating the contribution of James Dunn and Helen Hill to Timor-Leste studies. The Understanding Timor-Leste 2013 conference will be co-hosted by the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e, Swinburne University of Technology, and the Technical University of Lisbon.
CALL FOR PAPERS: The organisers now call for papers addressing any aspect of social science/ humanities/ scientific research related to Timor-Leste. The conference organisers welcome papers from academics, researchers, activists, community groups and policy makers. A refereed conference proceedings publication will be published. Conference sub-themes will include, but are not limited to the following:
• Peace-building
• Politics and International relations
• History and Heritage
• Culture and Society
• Anthropology and Archaeology
• Economics, business and trade
• Development policy
• International Development Assistance
• Agriculture
• Health policy
• Gender issues
• Language and Linguistics
• Education
• Anti-corruption
CONFERENCE LANGUAGES: Papers may be presented in Tetun, Portuguese, English, or Indonesian.

RELATED EVENTS: The Understanding Timor-Leste 2013 conference will follow the Future Directions for Food in Timor-Leste: Improving Nutrition, Cuisine, Food Markets and Rural Livelihoods conference, organised by Victoria University and the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e, to be held in Dili on Monday and Tuesday 11 – 12 July 2013. This will be a policy-oriented conference focussing on case studies of good practice, with invited speakers and participation by the Timorese government, the National University, Timorese civil society, Members of Parliament and other interested groups. These are linked conferences and discounted co-registration will be available for those who attend both.
On the weekend between these two conferences (Saturday and Sunday 13 – 14 July) a number of Expos will take place in Dili with exhibits by local organisations on the conference themes of the future of food in Timor-Leste and peace-building.
