<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Course Description<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Starting in the second semester, the School of Language Studies will<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">offer an online Portuguese language course. The course will be<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">delivered through Indiana University and coordinated locally, with<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">the help of a native Portuguese-speaking tutor.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Portuguese Language Course will be an elective for all ANU<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">students, and will also be open to the wider Canberra community.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Due to the support of the Embassy of Brazil, the students will have<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">the opportunity to take part in seminars, conferences, and short<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">extension courses with a Brazilian academic on topics related to<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Brazilian culture, society, and history.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The course is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">with an emphasis on Portuguese as spoken in Brazil. Students will<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, reaching an<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">advanced beginners level by the end of the second semester, based<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">on a communicative and culture-based approach in a simulated<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">immersion situation. Throughout the year, students will develop a<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">knowledge and understanding of Brazilian culture as well as that of<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">other Portuguese-speaking countries around the world.<o:p></o:p></p>
