ABOUT

The Asia Development Fellows: Emerging
Leadership for Asia's Future program provides highly qualified, young
professionals from Asia with an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen
their leadership skills and gain in-depth knowledge of Asia's critical
development challenges. The year-long professional advancement program is
designed to be a multifaceted experience, involving intensive learning
modules – short courses, conferences and study tours in Asia and the U.S.
– to enhance leadership skills, Asian development knowledge, professional
networks, and international exposure. The program provides the
flexibility for Fellows to design their own professional development
component and to stay in their current occupations while participating in
the program's rigorous modules.

Fellows are highly talented individuals, under age 40, who have
demonstrated outstanding commitment, integrity, and leadership potential
within their professional fields and within their larger community.
Fellows must also display a track record of experience and accomplishment
related to The Asia Foundation's
fields of expertise –
governance and law, economic development, women's empowerment,
environment, and regional cooperation.

VISION
Across Asia, it is clear that
the goal of improving lives, expanding opportunity, and increasing
equality will require innovative, effective and coordinated development
efforts, public and private sector commitment, and – perhaps most
importantly – inspirational leadership. In these times of rapid change
and extraordinary development challenge throughout Asia, the need for
creative, inspired and transformative leadership has never been more
imperative.

For 60 years, The Asia Foundation's support of emerging leadership in
Asia has yielded an extraordinary list of talented and distinguished
Asians – representing a cross-section of leadership in public office,
academia, the private sector, and civil society – who have influenced the
course of national development in their countries. The Asia
Foundation has always believed and invested in the "human
capital" needed for Asian societies to develop and
flourish.

The Asia Development Fellows program will target and empower an active,
dynamic and inspirational network of "change agents" across
Asia - NGO and civil society leaders, government officials and
policymakers, social entrepreneurs, journalists, environmentalists, and
academics - with the goal of finding shared common purpose in the pursuit
of creative and lasting solutions to the region's diverse development
needs and challenges. The various components of the program create a
nexus of different disciplines, working environments, professional
experiences, cultures and country contexts through which development
practitioners and professionals can effectively build practical skills
and enhance leadership capabilities while deepening bonds of regional and
international perspective, understanding and commitment.
