<p class="x_MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Whitlam era was short (1972-1975) but remains synonymous with dramatic social and political changes in Australian health, education,
citizenship and indigenous policies. In the field of international affairs, Whitlam signalled a stylistic shift for Australian diplomacy emphasising human rights, international law and increased regional engagement. This approach to international affairs was
not altogether dissimilar to the sense of change his government brought toward domestic affairs. This paper begins by outlining some of the philosophical foundations of the Whitlam approach to human rights and intellectual connections with ‘Liberal Internationalism’.
The paper highlights similarities and differences between the older tradition of ‘Liberal Internationalism’ (1945-1949), which greatly influenced Whitlam, and the style of ‘Internationalism’ employed during 1972-75. The paper explores Whitlam era commitments
to civil, political and economic rights, the desire to expand Australian diplomacy in Asia and the failure to adopt collective security measures through the United Nations (UN) for serious ‘breaches of the peace’. The paper concludes with a brief reflection
on potential lessons from the Whitlam period that are likely to have utility in the present and future operations of Australian foreign policy, human rights and international law.</span></p>
