*5^th International Summer Academy* “*Energy and the Environment”*

Realising the Paradigm Shift towards Energy Sustainability:
Climate Change, Technological Innovation, and the Challenge of an
Optimal Instrument Mix

Greifswald, Germany, July 20^th -August 2^nd , 2008

For the fifth time since its inception, the interdisciplinary *Summer
Academy “Energy and the Environment”* will convene highly qualified
young experts from all regions of the world for an intense educational
experience and exchange of ideas on the overarching theme of energy and
the environment. Past Summer Academies have seen the participation of
highly qualified and motivated participants from more than thirty
countries in all five continents, joining an equally diverse faculty of
internationally recognised academics, practitioners and officials from
ministries and supranational organisations.

This year, the Summer Academy will again be hosted by the Baltic
university town of Greifswald, where participants will address
fundamental challenges of climate change and options for technological
innovation. During the first week, the *academic programme* will cover
visions for a sustainable energy revolution, ethical dimensions of
energy, and the role of new and future technologies. The second week
will be specifically devoted to the design of a suitable instrument mix
for the achievement of this paradigm shift, with a view to political,
economic and legal requirements and consequences.

As in previous years, the academic programme will be complemented by a
highly diverse *social programme*, including a guided tour to different
energy facilities (a nuclear fusion research institute and a
decommissioned nuclear power plant), a tango evening, a culinary wine
tasting, a visit to the Berlin Reichstag, and a sailing trip on the
Baltic Sea.

Participation is open to all young researchers and practitioners with a
first university degree or significant working experience and a clear
focus on climate and energy policies. Please visit the website of the
Summer Academy at www.uni-greifswald.de/summeracademy
<http://www.uni-greifswald.de/summeracademy> for further information on
the application process and a detailed programme. A number of partial
and full scholarships are available for exceptionally qualified
applicants from developing countries and countries with economies in
transition. Applications are due by *April 30^th , 2008*; Late
applications will only be considered subject to availability of places.

/We look forward to your applications!/
