Illegal wildlife confiscated in transportation cases

On December 16th, 2008 Quang Ninh Police seized fourteen pairs of elephant tusks concealed in a car. In another case in Quang Nam, Ha Lam Town's Police caught a man illegally transporting 127kg of snakes.

Da Nang: Oil spill on Hai Van pass

On December 15th, 2008 on Hai Van pass a diesel oil tank from a depot under the management of Department of Economics, Ministry of National Defense broke, resulting in a large volume of oil and petrol spilling into the Da Nang Gulf. The cause of the spill was an outdated tank which had been in use for over 40 years without upgrade.

Hai Duong: Resident caught illegally keeping three Asiatic black bears 

The Provincial Police recently discovered a resident illegally keeping three Asiatic black bears (Selenarctos thibetanus) at their house. The case is still being investigated.

Ha Noi: Illegal transportation of 10m3 of timber

On December 11th, 2008 Ha Noi's Environmental Police, in cooperation with My Duc District Police and My Duc Forest Protection Unit, caught the owner of a car illegally transporting over 10m3 of timber. The evidence was confiscated for further investigation.

Dong Nai: Company polluting the environment for twelve years

Kim Phong Limited Company which specializes in manufacturing enamel tiles was recently found to have been dumping untreated waste water and toxic dust into the environment for twelve years. Local residents have complained about this pollution but it is still yet to be resolved

Bac Lieu: Bird Garden's staff killed birds for food

On December 11th, 2008 the inspection team of Bac Lieu Bird Garden apprehended their own staff stealing twenty rare birds for food. The Garden's management team has recommended the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development should stringently deal with the subjects.

Javan rhinoceros at risk of extinction

For a long time people have not seen any sign that the Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) in Cat Tien National Park have been reproducing. According to scientists, the current environment is too stressful for the rhinos to reproduce due to human impact on the area including a reduction in the rhinos' habitat. If this problem is not resolved, there is no doubt that the rhinos will become extinct sooner or later.

ENV's activities

 

Mobile Bear Exhibition and wildlife protection campaign in Central provinces

During the last two weeks of December, the ENV's Mobile Education Team has been conducting a wildlife protection campaign in Hue, Da Nang and Quang Binh. In Hue, ENV educators in cooperation with Truong Tien Plaza are holding the mobile bear exhibition "Bring Peace to Vietnam's Bears". A similar mobile bear exhibition was held at Thu Le Zoo in Hanoi on the first weekend of December. In Hue the team is also holding a meeting and training session with volunteers from ENV's Wildlife Volunteer Network. The volunteers will then carry out a wildlife trade survey in Hue. The mobile team will continue on to Da Nang where they will hold the bear protection exhibition in Da Nang University of Technology. On their way back to Ha Noi, the team will give a wildlife trade talk for the students of Quang Binh University in Dong Hoi city and cooperate with the students to conduct surveys in the area.
