Quang Ninh: Teenager loses arm while feeding bear

On March 30, a 14-year-old boy was feeding a caged bear being kept as a pet at a friend's home when he was attacked, leaving his left arm severely damaged and requiring amputation. The boy is recovering in hospital.

Ha Nam: Head of Provincial FPD receives slap on wrist

In 2009, the Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department was involved in illegal activities, such as organizing bear bile extractions for personal use and as gifts for senior leaders, and receiving an extra financial gift from a buyer following the government's sale of confiscated timber from an illegal logging case. To date, he has only received a warning for his actions, leaving obvious questions about the leniency.

Storage and transport of wildlife 

At the end of March 2010, Hanoi Environmental Police arrested a man transporting three pygmy lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus) in the grounds of the Thien Tru Pagoda. On April 1, a load containing butterfly lizards, turtles, civets, soft-shell turtles and other species was discovered and confiscated in north of Hue.

Yok Don National Park: Punishment for forest destruction violations not harsh enough 

There have been many cases recently involving large scale forest destruction and illegal logging at Yok Don National Park. Illegally bulldozed timber is often being used for the construction of Highway 14C, yet those responsible are only receiving administrative fines and other forest destruction cases are not being treated very seriously.

Hanoi: Jail terms for illegal logging of native tree

Following three days of decision-making, a legal panel determined that logging of the Dalbergia boniana, a tree native to Vietnam and appearing on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, is a huge loss to the nation. Nine years' imprisonment was given to a man found illegally logging the species.

Ha Tinh: Illegal logging a serious issue 

The illegal logging situation in Huong Lam district has became a very serious problem. In the area, loggers work in corporation with government enterprises and agencies to benefit illegally from timber trade activities without any intervention from authorities. Forests in surrounding areas are almost depleted.

Da Nang: Maritime-product processing enterprise pollutes the sea

During three years of operation, a maritime-product processing enterprise has emitted untreated waste water into the sea, contaminating the Tho Quang lock and forcing residents and boats to leave the area. Investigations into the matter are yet to achieve satisfactory outcomes.

Bear protection Public Service Announcement released

>From March 29, Vietnam's National TV station aired a new Public Service Announcement on bear protection. The message: "Bear bile is not a miracle drug, say "NO" to bear bile and bear products to protect Vietnam's endangered bears" was produced by Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV). ENV has distributed the message to 28 provincial television stations to be broadcast throughout the country.
