Vietnam News Briefs: Agriculture: Disease Damages Paddies in 28
Vietnam Localities
Vietnam News Briefs (Vietnam) - Thursday, September 9, 2010
from the VIETNAM NEWS BRIEFS, September 09, 2010 Black streaked dwarf
disease has affected 20,440 hectares of rice in 28 cities and
provinces in the central and northern regions of Vietnam, said the
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Of the area, 2,226 hectares, mostly in central provinces, were
severely damaged, Bui Si Doanh, deputy head of the ministry's
Department of Plant Protection was cited by the Nong Thon Ngay Nay
newspaper as saying Sept 9.

Doanh said that the ministry urged the stricken localities to
strengthen inspection of rice fields and destroy severely affected
portions, and spray pesticides to destroy brown planthoppers, the
insects that spread the disease.

The deputy head warned that the disease often peaks at the end of Sept
and early Oct.
