Bac Ninh: An old man hospitalized because of bear bile use

On September 20, an 80 year old man in Bac Ninh province used bear bile to
treat his back, however, rather than cure his ailments he ended up
hospitalized. Doctors said that he was allergic to bear bile, which contains
many poisonous elements and has a negative impact on the human body.

Dong Nai: Forest elephant appeared in residential area

On September 15, a large forest elephant, with only one tusk, suddenly
appeared in a residential area in Phu Hoa commune, Dinh Quan district, Dong
Nai province. According to Dong Nai Forest Protection Department, the
elephant is one of a herd of forest elephants which left or Buon Đon (Dak
Lak). The elephant is now living alone in a 14,000 ha primitive forest in
Dinh Quan district.

Khanh Hoa: 80 kg turtle freed  

On September 15, the Aquatic Resources Exploitation and Protection Station
in Ninh Hoa commune, Khanh Hoa province, released an 80 kg turtle back to
the sea in My A village, NinhThuy commune, Ninh Hoa district, Khanh Hoa
province. The turtle is around 15 years old, more than one m long and 1.2 m
wide.

Tay Bac: 'Live wildlife' markets secretly develop

Tay Bac region (in northwestern Vietnam) is known to have the most developed
wildlife smuggling and illegal transportation. For the first half of 2011,
Tay Bac authorities have identified five cases and confiscated about 65 kg
of live wildlife, and over 110 kg of wildlife products. Although authorities
have enhanced their methods to stop illegal trading activities, "live
wildlife markets" continue to secretly develop.

Quang Ngai: Subjects attack Forest Protection Department

On 20 September, Ba To District Police in Quang Ngai prosecuted two people
for illegal logging. The subjects had transported four timbers and had been
identified by local Forest Protection Department (FDP). The timbers were
seized; however, the subjects attacked FPD officials to steal the timbers
back. For this reason, the subjects were prosecuted.

Quang Binh: A stump-tailed macaque confiscated 

On September 21, ENV received a report that a stump-tailed macaque

(Macaca arctoides) was kept in a resident's house in An Ninh commune, Quang
Ninh district, Quang Binh province. ENV immediately asked local authorities
to check the site. Forest Protection Department in Quang Ninh district
confiscated the macaque. The stump-tailed macaque is expected to be released
into Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

BinhThuan: Three long-tailed macaques released  

On September 16, ENV received a report that three long-tailed macaques
(Macaca fascicularis) were being kept at Wind Champ Resort in BinhThuan
province. ENV immediately asked BinhThuan Forest Protection Department (FPD)
to inspect the site. The resort manager explained that the macaques belonged
to a Korean guest. 

 

After being advised by the FPD, the subject agreed to transfer the macaques.
The FPD released the macaques into Ta Cu Mountain area in Ham Thuan Nam
district, BinhThuan Province.

Yen Bai: Pygmy loris confiscated from a restaurant

On September 19, ENV received a report that one kg pygmy loris (Nycticebus
pygmaeus) was for sale at a restaurant in Yen Bai city. ENV immediately
informed Yen Bai Environment Police of the incident. The pygmy loris was
confiscated and Yen Bai Forest Protection Department planned to release it
back into the nature.

Hanoi: A two pheasants and two king cobras trafficking case prosecuted

On September 15, ENV received a report that Hanoi Environmental Police had
found two pheasants (Unidentified) and two king cobras (Ophiophagus hannah)
in a taxi in Hanoi. The subject said that he had bought the animals from
Lang Son province and intended to sell them in Hanoi. The subject was
prosecuted.

 

Silver pheasants and king cobras belong to Group IB of Decree 32/ND-CP (the
group of rare wild animals strictly prohibited from being used, hunted and
illegally traded).

Tra Vinh: A 70 kg green sea turtle released 

On September 20, ENV received a report that a man had discovered a green sea
turtle (Cheloniamydas) weighing over 70 kg in Phuoc Binh village, Long Toan
commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province. The turtle was about 80 cm
wide and one m long. 

 

ENV asked local authorities about the case. The Fishery Resources Protection
Department and Agricultural Inspection then came to encourage the man to
release the turtle back to the sea. On September 21, the green sea turtle
was released into the sea.
