Dear Colleagues,
The press release below is from the Society for General Microbiology
(SGM). I'm posting it here as I thought it may be of interest to HIFA
members.
I was interested to note their comment:
"Recognizing the importance of making research findings on swine ‘flu
easily accessible, leading microbiological publisher Society for General
Microbiology (SGM) has made all papers on H1N1 influenza viruses in
Journal of General Virology (JGV) and Journal of Medical Microbiology
(JMM) freely available online."
Is anyone else aware of release of such material from other journals and
publications that would be of use to healthcare providers, particularly
those now at the front line?
What are the views of HIFA2015 members on the accessibility of
information relating to 'swine flu' vs accessibility to information on
other diseases? Why do you think, for example, that 'swine flu' has
opened doors to information, whereas the daily toll of tens of thousands
of deaths from common diseases continues, partly because healthcare
providers (including mothers and health workers) continue to be starved
of vital information?

SGM MAKES ALL SWINE ’FLU PAPERS AVAILABLE FREE ONLINE
A novel influenza A H1N1 virus has just emerged in Mexico and is
spreading to other countries. This highly infectious, so-called ‘swine
flu’ is causing great concern worldwide for public health. Recognizing
the importance of making research findings on swine ‘flu easily
accessible, leading microbiological
publisher Society for General Microbiology (SGM) has made all papers on
H1N1 influenza viruses in Journal of General Virology (JGV) and Journal
of Medical Microbiology (JMM) freely available online. Information on
accessing the papers is at:
JGV http://jgv.sgmjournals.org/misc/news_060509.dtl
JMM http://jmm.sgmjournals.org/misc/news_060509.dtl
Under normal circumstances, papers published in JGV and JMM are freely
available without subscription 12 months after publication. The decision
to remove access controls on recent influenza A H1N1 articles was made
by the Editors-in-Chief of the two journals as part of the SGM’s
commitment to raising the understanding of microbiology. JGV
Editor-in-Chief Richard Elliott
(University of St Andrews, UK) said, "I am delighted to relax the access
controls on H1N1 papers, so that the information they contain on recent
research is immediately available. It is very important to make every
effort to assist the international health and microbiology community who
are dealing with the current outbreak, as well as to inform the public."
