One suspected of having had Mexico flu
--------------------------------------
Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai admitted on Saturday [9
May 2009] there was one patient under quarantine suspected of having
had Mexico flu [novel H1N1 influenza virus infection] but the person
had already been treated and was fit to return home. The minister
indicated there was no possibility of the person spreading the virus
after he was released from quarantine.
Mr Witthaya said the lab results on the patient had been sent to the
United States in order to have it matched with the H1N1 influenza
2009 virus samples there, as Thailand did not have samples of the virus.
The person under suspicion was among a group of returning Thais
entered into quarantine after having visited Mexico. The public
health minister said 10 persons remained under quarantine.
The ministers announcement came after he presided over a meeting of
Public Health Ministry officials convened to determine Thailand's
responses to the latest outbreak situation of the virus.

Authorities wait for result of flu tests on traveller
-----------------------------------------------------
Health officials from the HCM [Ho Chi Minh] City Department of Health
and the Centre for International Health Quarantine quarantined a
Malaysian traveller after he arrived at the Tan Son Nhat Airport
yesterday morning [7 May 2009] with a high body temperature. The
67-year-old tourist was rushed to Tropical Diseases Hospital for H1N1
tests and results will be announced today [8 May 2009].
The same day [7 May 2009], city health authorities conducted a
training course on prevention and care for patients with the type
A/H1N1 virus for doctors and medical staff at district-level
hospitals. The course was organised by the municipal health
department and the HCM City Tropical Diseases Hospital. The
department has also given 1200 Tamiflu tablets to the International
Health Quarantine Centre for its staff in case people infected with
the virus are found.
From [26 Apr 2009] to [6 May 2009], 74 271 travellers came to Viet
Nam through the Tan Son Nhat International Airport, 7365 of them from
epidemic-hit areas. According to Nguyen Van Chau, head of the
department, of 14 people suspected of having type A/H1N1, 13 have
tested negative for the virus.
The city's animal health department is also intensifying prevention
measures against the virus although no case of the flu has been found
in Viet Nam.
Huynh Huu Tho, head of the HCM City Animal Health Departments
Diagnosis, Test and Treatment Centre said veterinary agencies had
been ordered to strengthen inspection of livestock breeding
facilities to protect the animals from infection and provide safe
meat for public consumption.

[3] Japan: 3 confirmed cases

Japan confirms 3 cases of swine-flu infections
----------------------------------------------
Japan confirmed its 1st 3 cases of the new H1N1 influenza strain,
commonly known as swine flu, detected at Narita International
Airport, the government said Saturday [9 May 2009]. A high-school
teacher and 2 students initially tested positive for A-type influenza
after returning from an excursion in Canada on a flight via the
United States. They showed symptoms such as high fever and coughing
when the quarantine officials inspected their health conditions on
the plane before passengers embarked, the government said.
"The conditions of the 3 patients have remained stable," a Japanese
health official was quoted as saying Saturday [9 May 2009] by Kyodo
News Agency.
Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry officials said up to 11 people
could be infected as well, as they were seated next to one of the 3
patients with the swine flu. A total of 13 other passengers who may
be carrying the flu virus have traveled further on to Thailand,
Taiwan and other countries, the officials said. More than 30 people
who accompanied the 3 patients on their trip are expected to remain
quarantined at a separate facility near the airport for 10 days.
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said he would not consider the 3
cases as "the domestic emergence of the disease" because the
infections were detected on board the plane.

[4] Israel: 7th confirmed case
Date: Fri 8 May 2009

7th case of swine flu diagnosed in Israel
-----------------------------------------
As the World Health Organization urges government to stay alert for
possible pandemic of H1N1 virus; warns '3rd of world's population
could be infected;' tests show woman who returned to Israel from US
had contracted flu and recovered.
The 7th case of swine flu was diagnosed in Israel on Friday morning
[8 May 2009]. The test results of an Elkana resident returning to
Israel from the United States earlier this week confirmed that she
was carrying the H1N1 virus. The woman was not hospitalized, but
recovered from the flu. She contracted the flu during her stay in the
US, and was tested after displaying signs of the virus. The woman
returned to Israel on Sunday [3 May 2009], on El Al's 5:00 pm flight
number 008 from New York.
After the test results confirmed that she was infected, the Health
Ministry issued an announcement directing anyone who was on her
flight and developed signs of the flu to go to the emergency room.
The new H1N1 virus has infected 2371 people in 24 countries,
according to the WHO's latest tally issued overnight.
There are 1112 laboratory-confirmed cases in Mexico, the epicenter of
the outbreak, including 42 deaths, it said. The United States has 896
cases, including 2 deaths, while Canada has 201 cases and no fatalities.
Evidence that the disease has taken hold in communities outside the
Americas would prompt WHO Director-General Margaret Chan to declare a
full pandemic.
Chan raised the global pandemic alert level last week to 5 out of 6
in response to the spread of H1N1 flu. Phase 5 means a pandemic is imminent.
The WHO's Dr. Keiji Fukuda urged Asian governments to stay alert for
a possible wider pandemic that "could infect a 3rd or more of the
world's population in the next several months, in the next year. Even
if the illnesses appear relatively mild on an individual level, with
large numbers of infections on the global population, you can get
large numbers of seriously ill people," Fukuda told health ministers
from the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
plus China, Japan and South at a meeting in Bangkok on Thursday [7 May 2009].

[5] South Korea: 3rd confirmed case

South Korea Confirms 3rd Flu Case
---------------------------------
South Korea has confirmed a 3rd case of swine flu in a 62-year-old
woman who traveled on the same flight as an infected Catholic nun
returning from a trip to Mexico, an official said Thursday [7 May
2009]. Health Ministry spokesman Oh Sung-il said that final tests
showed the woman had swine flu, but that the woman already has
recovered from the disease and will be released from a military-run
hospital later Thursday [7 May 2009].
The woman had been staying in the U.S. state of Arizona for months
and was on the same flight back to South Korea as the country's 1st
confirmed patient, a Catholic nun who returned home from a trip to
Mexico on [26 Apr 2009]. The Catholic nun had been quarantined in the
hospital south of Seoul, but was released earlier this week after recovering.
A fellow Catholic nun who drove her home from the airport on [26 Apr
2009] also fell ill and became the country's 2nd confirmed swine flu
patient. But she was also released from the hospital this week after
recovering.
