Chinese mainland's 1st A (H1N1) flu case in "stable condition": hospital
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Chinese mainland's 1st confirmed A/H1N1 patient is in a stable
condition, said a Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital authority
Monday [11 May 2009].

Tian Ming, vice president of Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital,
said [his] temperature had fallen back to normal.

Both [his] father and his girlfriend, who had close contact with the
patient, were isolated for medical observation at the same hospital.
They didn't show abnormal symptoms, said Tian.

[The patient], 30, who had been studying at an American university,
arrived in Beijing on board the Northwest Airlines flight NW029 [9
May 2009], after making a transfer in Tokyo from St Paul, Minnesota
in the United States. His body temperature was normal when entering
China. He then flew from Beijing to Chengdu on Sichuan Airlines
flight 3U8882 the same day.

Bao was found to have a fever on the flight from Beijing to Chengdu
accompanied by a sore throat, coughing, a stuffy nose and sneezing.

He went to the Sichuan People's Hospital after getting off the plane,
and was tested "weakly positive" to A (H1N1) virus twice by the
Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He was then
transferred to the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital.

[The man] was the 2nd confirmed case of A (H1N1) influenza in China.
On [1 May 2009] in Hong Kong, a 25-year-old male Mexican was
confirmed to be infected with influenza A (H1N1), and those who were
in close contact with him were put under quarantine in 19 mainland regions.

[2] Thailand: one suspected case

Thai influenza case 'just common flu'
-------------------------------------
A Thai suspected of contracting the type A (H1N1) influenza has fully
recovered after undergoing a 5-day antiviral regimen, which proves
that what the person most likely had was the common human flu, Public
Health Minister Wittaya Kaewparadai said yesterday [10 May 2009].

"The person is now safe, not sick, not having any fever. The person
is now in a normal state," he said.

Lab results due here on Wednesday [6 May 2009] from the US Centres
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will verify that the
unidentified person was not suffering from the swine flu, he said.

"By then, Thailand will be free of the disease, and so far there's
been only one suspicious case, pending CDC confirmation indicating
that it is only ordinary flu infecting the person," he said.

That person's case was foolproof, because the person was recovering
after the end of the 7-day critical period, he said.

The World Health Organisation yesterday [10 May 2009] reported a
total of 4379 cases of the new influenza type A (H1N1) in 29
countries, with 49 fatalities, the latest coming from Costa Rica. The
figure was a large jump from the previous day's tally of 3440 cases reported.

A total of 436 346 Thai and foreign travellers underwent thermal
scans at key Thai airports between [27 Apr 2009] and Saturday [9 May
2009]. Of the 72 registering high body temperatures, 27 have been
placed under ministry care and 8 were put on the watch list,
including the person whose final diagnosis from the US CDC is pending.

A Chulalongkorn Hospital doctor commended the ministry's disclosure
of the case of the person in question, saying it was transparent and
crucial in communicating with the public over the severity of the new flu.

Japan confirms 4th case of swine flu
------------------------------------
Japan confirmed its 4th case of swine flu Sunday [10 May 2009] in a
teenager who recently returned from a school trip to Canada. 3 others
in the group that visited Canada were earlier identified as having the virus.

The patient, who was not identified, is being quarantined at a
hospital near the airport, the Japanese Health and Welfare Ministry
said. He had been in Oakville, Ontario, since [24 Apr 2009] and
returned on Friday [8 May 2009] on a Northwest Airlines flight from Detroit.

A lab at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases confirmed he
had the same strain of the disease identified in the deaths of 53
people worldwide, most of them in Mexico, the epicentre of the disease.

The 3 teenage students and a teacher in his 40s had visited Ontario
on a home stay program since last month [April 2009] with about 30
other students, and returned to Tokyo via Detroit on a Northwest
Airlines flight, Health and Welfare Minister Yoichi Masuzoe told a
televised news conference. They had participated in various programs
hosted by a local high school in Oakville.

Andrew Morrison, a spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Health, said
Friday [8 May 2009] that Ontario and federal health officials were
investigating whether the individuals were infected while in Canada.

Japan has taken 49 other passengers who were on the plane to
hospitals for further tests, and has tracked down all but 4 of the
passengers on the flight who remained in Japan.

The governments in China and Hong Kong said they had quarantined
travellers who were on the flight and continued on to their countries.

Hong Kong is keeping 2 people under observation who have not shown
any flu symptoms.

China's Health Ministry said it had placed 7 people under
observation. Their conditions were not immediately known.
