Malaysia confirms 1st case of swine flu
---------------------------------------
Malaysia on Friday [15 May 2009] confirmed its 1st case of swine flu,
a 21-year-old student who recently returned from the United States.
A statement by the Health Ministry's director-general, Dr Ismail
Merican, said the young man was hospitalized on Thursday [14 May
2009] after suffering from fever, sore throat and body aches. He had
returned to Malaysia from the United States on Wednesday [13 May 2009].
Tests confirmed that he was infected with the A (H1N1) virus, the
statement said. He is receiving anti-viral treatment and is in stable
condition, it said.
Ismail said the ministry is in touch with his family members to
ensure that he did not infect them, but they have not been placed
under quarantine. He also urged all passengers on the Malaysia
Airlines flight from Newark on Wednesday [13 May 2009] to contact the ministry.
Ismail said the public has no reason to panic as his department was
taking steps to protect public health.
Globally, 70 people have died of swine flu, 64 of them in Mexico
where the virus originated. 4 deaths have been reported in the US,
one in Canada, and one in Costa Rica.
According to the World Health Organization, some 6672 people in 33
countries are confirmed to be suffering from the disease.
The WHO estimates that up to 2 billion doses of swine flu vaccine
could be produced every year, though the 1st batches wouldn't be
available for 4 to 6 months.

[2] Thailand (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya): suspected case, not

A lab test's result showed on Thursday [14 May 2009] that former
university lecturer who was quarantined in Ayutthaya [see prior
PRO/MBDS posting Influenza A (H1N1) - worldwide (11): Asia (China,
Thailand) 20090514.1804] after developing high fever has a seasonal
flu, not influenza A (H1N1), which is spreading in many countries.
Doctors are still waiting for result of test on a boy in Phitsanulok
who has a flu after visiting a foreign country.
Deputy Permanent Secretary to Health Ministry Dr Paijit Warajit said
the patient in Ayutthaya suffered from influenza type B, not type A.

Two more Thais quarantined for probable A/H1N1 flu
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A hospital in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai has
quarantined a 9-year-old boy, who has a high fever after returning
from Japan, while sending his sample to test for the A/H1N1 flu,
Chiang Mai Public Health Director Dr Wattana Kanchanakamol said
Friday [15 May 2009].
The boy has been quarantined since [13 May 2009], The Nation
newspaper's website reported. He traveled to Japan with his mother and brother.
All of them had fever after returning from Japan and earlier were
closely watched for 7 days, however his mother and brother recovered
and were allowed to return home, Dr Wattana said.
Separately, director of San Sai Hospital in San Sai district of
Chiang Mai, Worawut Phowatcharakul said a woman, who has been
quarantined in the hospital, is suffering higher fever.
No one, even her family members, is allowed to visit her, the doctor
said, and refused to reveal her name.
Meanwhile, Dr Wattana said his office has surveyed and found that
over 100 students in Chiang Mai had traveled abroad during the recent
summer break.
Hence, the health office in Chiang Mai has asked cooperation from
universities and schools there to allow students returning aboard to
stay at home for 7 days to observe their condition before going to
school, said the doctor.
Since [12 May 2009], Thailand's Public Health Ministry has had its
1st 2 A (H1N1) flu cases, however, the 2 patients have already
recovered and will not spread the deadly flu disease to others. The 2
persons had returned from Mexico.

Viet Nam reports another A (H1N1) suspected case
------------------------------------------------
The Vietnamese health authorities said another tourist from Canada
arriving in the country on Wednesday [13 May 2009] has showed
flu-like symptoms, the local newspaper Labor reported on Friday [15 May 2009].
The man, whose age is not mentioned by the newspaper and entered Viet
Nam via the Lao Bao international border gate of the central Quang
Tri province, showed higher body temperature and had cough. He was
isolated and suspected of having the flu A (H1N1) virus. The test
result is not available now, said health officials.
Amid the high possibility of the flu reaching the country, Vietnamese
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Thursday requested ministries,
authorities in cities and provinces of Viet Nam nationwide to take
swift action to prevent an outbreak of the A/H1N1 flu in the country.

H1N1 suspect in Indonesia
-------------------------
A 31-year-old woman is being treated for suspected H1N1 flu in
Indonesia after returning from a trip to the United States, a health
ministry official said on Friday [15 May 2009].
If confirmed it would be the Southeast Asian country's 1st known case
of the A (H1N1) virus, which has killed 65 people and infected more
than 6400 around the world.
'We are naming her an A (H1N1) suspect because she had been to the
United States and South Korea, which are areas with swine flu cases,'
contagious diseases chief Tjandra Yoga Aditama told AFP.
'We have taken a throat swab and blood sample from her for further
examination.' The woman was admitted to Hasan Sadikin hospital in
Bandung [West Java] on Thursday morning [14 May 2009] complaining of
flu-like symptoms but these have subsided, the hospital's infectious
diseases head, Hadi Jusuf, said.
'She was in Los Angeles for 6 days from [6 May 2009] and (travelled)
through South Korea,' he said.
He said the woman had tested negative for H1N1 flu at the airport in
South Korea but her symptoms had returned and further tests were necessary.
