[2] China (Beijing): one confirmed case
Date: Sat 16 May 2009
Source: Xinhua News Agency [edited]

One confirmed case of A/H1N1 flu was reported in Beijing, the
Ministry of Health said on Saturday evening [16 May 2009].
This is the 3rd confirmed case of A/H1N1 flu on the Chinese mainland,
according to the ministry.
The case involved an 18-year-old female who studies in a university
in New York state in the United States, which was the case reported
previously as a suspected case by the Emergency Management Office of
the Beijing Municipal Government Saturday evening [16 May 2009].
She was currently in a stable condition with a normal body
temperature, the ministry said.
The female, a Beijing native, arrived in Beijing on [11 May 2009] on
U.S. Continental Airlines flight C089 and went home accompanied by
her mother, said the ministry.
She did not go out or meet friends after arriving home, according to
the ministry's investigation.
She felt unwell and physically weak around noon on [12 May 2009] and
took her temperature herself.
She went to the fever outpatient section of the Peking University
First Hospital in the evening on [14 May 2009] and said she developed
symptoms of cough, sputum, headache, sore throat, chest distress and
sore muscles, with a body temperature of 37.7 C.
She was initially diagnosed as having fever, needing further checking
and "suspected of A/H1N1 flu," the ministry said.
The patient was transferred to the Beijing Ditan Hospital early in
the morning on [15 May 2009].
The Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tested a
specimen taken via a swab from her throat, which showed she was
"suspected positive" for A/H1N1 and positive for PIV-H3.
The China CDC and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences tested the
specimen again the next day and confirmed she had contracted the A/H1N1 virus.
The ministry said experts made the decision based on the patient's
symptoms, epidemiological investigation results and laboratory tests.
All the people who had close contact with her had been tracked down
and put under medical observation, with no one feeling unwell, it said.
According to the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, [she] had only had
contact with 2 persons, her mother and the taxi driver who carried
her to Peking University First Hospital.
Neither of the 2 had shown flu symptoms, said Deng Ying, director of
Beijing CDC.
Expressing his appreciation of the 18-year-old [girl] for keeping a
clear diary about her journey in Beijing, Fang Laiying, director of
Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, said, "she even kept the receipt
from the taxi driver, otherwise it would be difficult for us to find
the driver."
"The quarantine hospital had arranged 3 doctors and 3 nurses for
[her] and took strict medical observation on her," said Mao Yu,
president of Beijing Ditan Hospital. [She] is in stable condition as
her temperature is getting back to normal and her appetite getting
better," Mao said.
The health ministry has reported the case to the World Health
Organization, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and relevant countries.
The 1st 2 cases in mainland China are Chinese nationals who had been
students in the United States and Canada and were traveling back to
their homes in the past days of the month [May 2009], contracted the
flu strain, and developed symptoms shortly after they set foot in China.

Seven more students were confirmed as being infected with the H1N1
strain of influenza A after Japan confirmed the 1st domestic
infection case Saturday morning [16 May 2009], local authorities and
the health ministry said.
Among the newly confirmed, 3 students were from a high school in
Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Four others were from the same high school as
the 1st confirmed patient, a 17-year-old male high school student in Kobe.
All the 8 students, 2 male and 6 female, had no record of overseas
travel, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. But
some of them had contact during a volleyball match.
There are also suspected cases in nearby Osaka Prefecture.
Japan's health ministry confirmed the 1st domestic case of infection
with the H1N1 strain of influenza A virus on Saturday morning [16 May
2009]. The total number of infections/cases have reached 12 in Japan.
In the face of the latest development, the government shifted the
stage of its new-flu action program from "a period of overseas
outbreak" to "an early period of domestic outbreak" and called for
companies and schools in the areas concerned to allow individuals to
avoid commuting during rush hours.
The health ministry is planning to gradually down scale the currently
conducted strict quarantine inspections and shift to focusing on
preventing the domestic spread of influenza.

A total of 13 students in Japan were confirmed to have been infected
with the new strain of influenza A, the health ministry and local
authorities said Sunday [17 May 2009], bringing the total number of
infections in Japan to 25.
The 13 students, 12 from a high school in Osaka Prefecture and one in
Hyogo Prefecture, had no record of overseas travel. The confirmation
follows the discovery of Japan's 1st 8 domestic cases of the new flu
in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, which adjoins Osaka, on Saturday [16 May 2009].
Japan found the 1st 4 cases of infection in travelers who returned
from North America.
The 12 in Osaka Prefecture are from the Kansai Okura Senior High
School in the city of Ibaraki. About 110 students at the high school
have shown symptoms of influenza since around Monday [11 May 2009],
according to local media reports. The health ministry said the
patients are recovering at local hospitals.
The Japanese government on Saturday [16 May 2009] shifted the stage
of its new-flu action program from "a period of overseas outbreak" to
"an early period of domestic outbreak" and called for companies and
schools in the areas concerned to allow individuals to avoid
commuting during rush hours.
The Kyodo News quoted Tashiro, a member of the World Health
Organization's emergency committee, as saying that several hundred
people in Japan already may have been infected with the H1N1 strain
of influenza A.

A 23-year-old man, who arrived at the central Indian city of
Hyderabad airport from the United States, has been found to be
infected with influenza A H1N1, said the Health Ministry Saturday [16
May 2009]. This is the 1st case of swine flu in India.
The unidentified patient traveled via Emirates Airline from New York
to Hyderabad via Dubai. He reached India Wednesday morning [13 May
2009] and was quarantined after he was found to be suffering from
fever, said the ministry.
"He was shifted to the identified isolation facility under strict
infection control. His samples have tested positive for influenza A
H1N1," said the health ministry statement.
The person is being treated with anti-influenza drugs Oseltamivir and
Afebrile, said the ministry, adding that all the passengers who came
in contact with the infected person are also being monitored.
Over the past several weeks, India had tested negative more than 40

A 2nd Malaysian has been confirmed to be infected with the A H1N1 flu
virus at the Penang Hospital in northern Penang state, Health
Ministry deputy director-general Ramlee Rahmat said on Saturday [16 May 2009].
The patient, a woman, was admitted to the Penang Hospital on Friday
[15 May 2009], and the results were confirmed on Saturday morning [16
May 2009], he said.
She was a friend of the 1st patient who was confirmed with the virus
at the Sungai Buloh Hospital in central Selangor state on Friday [15
May 2009], Ramlee said. She was also on the same flight as him from
the United States, he added. Both patients are in stable condition.
The 1st patient, a 21-year-old male student, who flew on Malaysia
Airlines flight MH091 from New Jersey, United States to the Kuala
Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) via Stockholm in Sweden, has been
placed in an isolation ward at the hospital near here since Thursday
evening [14 May 2009] for treatment.
Ramlee said the woman's family, as well as 2 other friends of the 2
infected, were put under home quarantine.
The Malaysian health official also said the fever of the 1st
confirmed patient had dropped, and his 5 family members under
quarantine also have not shown symptoms.
The staff of a private clinic that had 1st contacted [the family] and
placed [them] under home quarantine have shown no symptoms of the
virus infection, he added. Ramlee said 35 of the 192 passengers
aboard the flight had contacted the ministry.
Of the 192 passengers, 81 Malaysians and 38 foreigners were still in
Malaysia, and 73 have left the country.
The ministry has informed the World Health Organization about the 73
people who had left so that the countries of destination could be
notified, he added.

[7] Turkey: 1st 2 confirmed cases
Date: Sat 16 May 2009

Turkey on Saturday [16 May 2009] confirmed its 1st 2 cases of H1N1
influenza after tests showed the mother of the 1st victim, an
American male, had also contracted the virus, a Health Ministry official said.
The man, traveling with his family from the United States via
Amsterdam, was diagnosed after arriving at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport
en route to Iraq on Friday [15 May 2009], Turkish Health Minister
Recep Akdag said at a news conference.
Six family members traveling with the man were also quarantined at a
Turkish research hospital, where they were being given anti-viral
medication, Akdag said.
Tests showed the man's mother was also infected with the H1N1 virus,
Harun Celik, the Health Ministry's spokesman, told Reuters. Local
media had reported earlier the man's wife was suffering from the
disease, but Celik denied those reports.
"His mother also tested positive for swine flu. None of the other
family members have any health issues," Celik said.
The entire family will be held for observation until [21 May 2009] to
determine whether they may have contracted swine flu, because the
virus takes up to a week to manifest itself, Akdag said.
India on Saturday [16 May 2009] also reported its 1st victim of the
H1N1 virus. The spread of the disease has led the World Health
Organization to declare that a pandemic is imminent.
India and Turkey are the 37th and 38th countries to confirm cases of
H1N1 virus. The WHO said on Saturday [16 May 2009] 72 people had died
from the disease or its complications.
The Iraqi-American family was traveling on a KLM aircraft to Istanbul
that was carrying 163 passengers, most of whom are now being
monitored for signs of the flu, Akdag said.
"We know of the existence of a few (passengers) whom we've been
unable to contact," Akdag said. "They need to be alert so that they
can be given preventative medicine and in order to protect others."
Thermal cameras set up at the Istanbul airport had detected the man
had a high fever, and tests at the national laboratory revealed he
was carrying the H1N1 virus, Akdag said.
"Everything is under control," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told
reporters when asked about the diagnosis of the country's 1st H1N1
case. "Everything is being monitored closely."
The WHO has said there were 8451 confirmed cases of infections with
the influenza strain, a mixture of swine, bird and human viruses.
