Subject: Gendered and Rights-Based Review of Vietnamese Legal Documents
through the Lens of CEDAW

Greetings from UNIFEM Vietnam!

Could you kindly share with other colleagues through your networks the
attached report on "CEDAW and the Law: A Gendered and Rights-Based Review
of Vietnamese Legal Documents through the Lens of CEDAW" and its summary
that UNIFEM has completed.

Hard copies are now available at UNIFEM Vietnam.

You can also download the report from
http://cedaw-seasia.org/vietnam_resources.html or

http://cedaw-seasia.org/resource_documents.html.

The review was conducted from July 2007 and during the review, the draft
report was already shared with the National Assembly, line ministries and
local NGOs as well as the donor community in Vietnam (UN agencies,
embassies/bilateral donors and international NGOs) in several rounds for
inputs and updates in the last quarter of 2007 and 2008.

In fact, the draft of this report was used as a reference guide by our
colleagues in the National Assembly in monitoring/oversight and law making
processes, as well as for developing by-law documents (governmental
decrees, ministerial circulars, etc) for the Law on Gender Equality and
the Law on Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence by the line
ministries.

At the request of our colleagues in the National Assembly, government
ministries and local NGOs, the Vietnamese version of the report will come
out in June this year so that they could use more in their review and
reform of related laws, such as the Labour Code, the Civil Code, the
Criminal Code and other legal documents in promoting the human rights of
women.

The report could be a good tool for our donors as well in their
legal/judicial support and assistance to Vietnam.

Thanks and best regards,
