[PRO/MBDS would like to caution readers that there is a high
likelihood that the number of confirmed cases reported within
countries around the world probably represent significant
underestimates of the true number of cases, as many cases of
infection with H1N1 result in mild illness that does not come to the
attention of the health sector. The reports below represent confirmed
cases that have come to the attention of the health sector and where
laboratory testing has been done to confirm the infection. The
presence of these confirmed cases serves to document that the H1N1
virus is still circulating in these countries, and the reports of
fatalities associated with H1N1 infection serves to point out that
while there are many mild cases, the virus has been associated with
fatalities. - Mod.MPP]

Swine flu makes dozens ill in Northeast, shuts school
-----------------------------------------------------
The H1N1 influenza outbreak that hit last year [2009] is spreading in
3 Northeastern provinces, making nearly 40 people ill so far and
prompting a school to close.
In Ubon Ratchathani province, 20 senior education officials caught
the disease, known as human Swine flu, after attending a seminar
there, and 10 of them were admitted to hospital after catching the
flu on Thursday [5 Aug 2010]. The officials are from neighboring
Amnat Charoen province. They have been advised to seek further
treatment in their home province, after the seminar was called off
and they were asked to leave Ubon Ratchathani.
About 100 officials scheduled to attend the seminar fell ill but were
diagnosed with common and seasonal flu. All hotels in Ubon
Ratchathani where they were staying have been sanitized.
In Buri Ram, Marie Anusorn School in Muang district closed
immediately after 19 5th-graders contracted the flu. One of them is
receiving hospital treatment. The school closed yesterday [6 Aug
2010] morning and will reopen on Monday [9 Aug 2010]. School
management has issued an apology to parents for the immediate closure
without prior notice. Mattresses and sleepwear of toddlers in its
kindergarten classes have been sanitized.
Screening of suspected cases will be conducted upon the school's
reopening on Monday [9 Aug 2010], and those with symptoms will be
excused from classes.

Swine flu recurs in [Ho Chi Minh City] HCMC
--------------------------
The influenza A (H1N1) virus has reappeared in Ho Chi Minh City after
an absence of several months, the local Center of Preventive Health has warned.
At a meeting with local health agencies Wednesday (August 4), the
center reported that a 6-year-old child who was admitted to the
Children Hospital No.2 late last month [July 2010] and died early
this week [August 2010], was found infected with H1N1 virus.
An 8-year-old girl in District 8, meanwhile, is now suspected of
catching the flu, the center said.
Deputy Minister of Health, Trinh Quan Huan, had been quoted by Tuoi
Tre newspaper in June [2010] as saying no swine flu case had been
reported in Viet Nam for more than 2 months.
