Cancer could kill more than 13.2 million people a year by 2030, the United Nations' cancer agency says in a new projection.
Cancer could kill more than 13.2 million people a year by 2030, the United Nations' cancer agency says in a new projection.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer projects that by 2030 almost 21.4 million new cases will be diagnosed annually, assuming cancer rates stay the same over the next two decades.
"These figures represent the most accurate assessment of the global cancer burden available at present and can be used in the setting of priorities for cancer control in different regions of the world," said Christopher Wild, director of IARC.
The agency launched its new cancer statistics resource called Globocan 2008 on Tuesday.
In 2008, the latest year for which figures are available, an estimated 12.7 million new cases were diagnosed, and 7.6 million cancer deaths occurred.
Developing countries had a higher proportion of the cancer burden - 56 per cent of new cases worldwide and 63 per cent of all cancer deaths, the report showed.
Cervical cancer and liver cancers were more common in developing regions, while prostate and colorectal cancers were more common in developed regions, Wild said.
The most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide in 2008 were:
Lung cancer, with 1.61 million cases or nearly 13 per cent of the total.
Breast cancer, with 1.38 million cases or about 11 per cent.
Colorectal cancers, with 1.23 million cases or 9.7 per cent.
The trend toward population growth and aging were factored into the projections.
