I would like to ask your help in finding
out what is happening regarding criteria for promotion for
academic staff not in Faculties.

The 1991 academic award restructuring agreement established
position classification standards which set out the roles and
responsibilities (general standard, specific duties and skill
base) for each academic level from A to E. The trouble for staff
in centres is that the work we do is not adequately described in
these standards and therefore centre staff have difficulty when
a case is being made for promotion.

I believe that the staff development community should develop
standards which truly reflect our work. The promotions committee
at Monash has asked me to proceed along these lines and we are
doing so. It would be of assistance to me if other centres were
able to liaise in the preparation of a more generic set of standards
rather than a Monash-specifc set.

If you have information or would like to discuss this further please
contact me directly: Terry.Hore@hearu.monash.edu.au
