The Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development
6th International Improving Student Learning Symposium
IMPROVING STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
7th - 9th September 1998
University of Brighton, England
CALL FOR
Papers, Seminars, Work in progress and Work in preparation plans
_____________________________________________________
The Improving Student Learning Symposium is now an established event on the international calendar with over 800 participants from over 15 different countries and 300 papers in the last three years.
The 1998 Symposium will focus on improving student learning outcomes, under the following headings:
Themes
1 Assessing outcomes
2 Curricula and programme design to improve student learning outcomes
3 Assessing understanding as an outcome
4 Student perception and understanding of outcomes
5 Relating outcomes to professional practice and industry requirements
6 Generic and transferable skills as outcomes
7 Defining standards and academic levels
8 Using evidence of outcomes to evaluate teaching and courses
Invitations are invited in five formats: all submissions will be reviewed by two independent referees. Decisions will be relayed to authors by 20th March 1998. The decisons of the Symposium Committee will be final. Submissions should be in the form of an abstract of 300-400 words, identifying which format is involved. Longer and shorter submissions will not be considered. A 1,000 word summary of all accepted sessions will be needed for participants at the Symposium. Seminars will not be published in proceedings.
__________________________________________________________
The five formats are:
1: PAPERS
Papers should present new research findings, new analyses of issues or new overarching conceptions of areas, and should be used where there is substantive new content to present. They should involve research evidence and/or use of theory to interpret learning phenomena. They should not be used for descriptive accounts of practice. Evidence should involve more than untheorised evaluation feedback from students. No more than two thirds of the available 60 minutes should be used for presentation, allowing time for questions and discussion. Papers should be written before the symposium and made available for participants at the session at which the paper is presented and for the organisers to make available to other participants. Papers will be redrafted after presentation at the conference and published in Proceedings. The final form should be between 2,500 and 4,000 words.
Criteria
* Evidence/findings new
* Analysis/interpretation new
* Use of research tools
* Use of theory
* Focus on theme

2: SYMPOSIA
Symposia will involve three related papers presented together in an extended session lasting 90 minutes with a panel consisting of the Convenor and the authors of the three papers. Individuals are warmly invited to make a proposals for a symposium which they will take responsibility for convening. Submissions must include an overview of the relationship between the papers as well as abstracts for each paper Papers will each be refereed on their own merits, as below. A 500 word overview by the Convenor will be published, together with the papers, in Proceedings.
Criteria
* Three identified papers which have a clear linking theme.
* Individual papers refereed as above.
__________________________________________________________
3: SEMINARS
Seminars should be used where there are new findings or analyses of issues but where the interpretation is open or new and would benefit from extensive discussion or where interpretation is controversial. No more than one third of the available 60 minutes should be used for presentation, allowing the majority of time for questions and discussion which should be planned to involve all participants. A 1,000 word summary should be provided for participants at the Symposium but seminars will not be published in proceedings.
Criteria
* Topic interesting for discussion
* Use of evidence and theory
* Focus on theme
__________________________________________________________
4: WORK IN PROGRESS REPORTS
Work in Progress Reports are shorter than Papers. They are designed to allow the reporting of research and development work at an early stage of development, from researchers new to the field, where interim results look interesting or where advice and reactions are sought before further developing a research and development project. They are still expected to involve evidence and use of theory rather than simply to be accounts of practice or of untheorised student feedback. Work in Progress Reports will be paired in sessions lasting 60 minutes with each report involving no more than 20 minutes presentation with 10 minutes for questions. A 1,000 word summary should be provided for participants at the Symposium. Work in progress reports are not published in proceedings.
Criteria
* Use of research tools
* Use of theory
* Would support the author(s)
* Focus on theme
__________________________________________________________
5: WORK IN PREPARATION PLANS
These are short sessions, similar to Work in Progress. They are intended to encourage the presentation of research plans or proposals of research not yet started, where specific advice and reactions are sought on the proposed research methodology and appropriate theory. Work in preparation plans will be paired sessions lasting 60 minutes with each 'plan' involving no more than 10 minutes presentation and 20 minutes for discussion.
Criteria
* Proposed use of research tools
* Use of theory
* Originality of hypothesis
* Focus on theory
**************************************************************
All categories of contribution are expected to show awareness of existing literature, research tools, theories and interpretations and to build on this literature.
