Welcome to the new HERDSA email list. The original list started about six
years ago and has been used to post details of positions and forthcoming
conferences. To receive the postings it was necessary to subscribe to the
list server at the ANU. It became clear at the recent Executive Committee
meeting that not all HERDSA members were aware of this procedure and the way
to subscribe had disappeared into the mists of time.

The Executive decided to subscribe all members and to use the list to
regularly disseminate news about the Society and higher education. Hence you
have received the first message from the revised list.

We appreciate that you may not wish to receive yet more email so you can
easily unsubscribe from the list. However we would ask that you give the
list a months trial before doing so as we would like to experiment with
providing useful information to members on a regular basis.

To start the ball rolling there are two topics:

1. The 2002 HERDSA Conference in Perth

2. A request from the President.

The conference was a great experience for all. It was brilliantly organised,
the sessions were stimulating and the social programme was great fun.
You can access all the papers and two of the keynote addresses on the
conference web site:

www.ecu.edu.au/conferences/herdsa

You can also access the online discussions that followed the keynote
addresses. This was a new innovation this year.

Message from the President. Angela Brew.

HERDSA Submission to the Australian Government's Ministerial Review Paper:
Striving for quality: learning, teaching, and scholarship

I am putting together a response from HERDSA to this review paper and I
would like it to represent as many HERDSA members' views as possible. Please
email me <a.brew@itl.usyd.edu.au> with your ideas and suggestions about
what you would like to see in HERDSA's submission. Deadline for your ideas
to reach me is 26th August 2002.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Angela Brew
(HERDSA President)

Note. There are now three Review Papers available. They are:
