Greetings Herdsa Members

We are trying to turn over as many stones as possible and find studies that
demonstrate a link between institutional initiatives in staff development
and a demonstrated change in student outcomes at the tertiary level. Our
interest extends to examples of initiatives which draw on best practice and
contribute to a demonstrated improvement in student outcomes.

We would be very appreciative of any research-based reports, articles, or
studies (published or unpublished) that Herdsa members have contributed to
or know of. This might include reviews or examples of good practice that
have been produced recently or have had limited circulation, or any
suggestions as to where we might look to find these. Any help in locating
such material would be very gratefully received and be will acknowledged in
the final report. We are most willing to share any findings with Herdsa
members.

This material is for a best evidence synthesis on the teacher/educator and
learning environment influences on student outcomes in undergraduate
tertiary study which is a project we are undertaking for the NZ Ministry of
Education and will be used to inform Ministry policy in this area.

We are currently undertaking a broad-based search of the international
literature in this area and are interested in accessing the widest range of
research that we are able to. Specifically we are looking at the effects of
institutional efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning and
evidence as to whether these contribute to enhanced student outcomes
especially at the broader institutional level. Our focus is on the effects
of academic development (professional/teacher/staff development); the
effects of quality and programme enhancement initiatives; the impact of the
teaching environment e.g. intensification of academic work; reward systems
for teaching etc.; and the use of resource-based teaching (printed study
material, web-based course material).

Thank you in anticipation

Gordon Suddaby
Kogi Naidoo
