Dear Colleague

I am writing in the hope that you might be interested in participating in an
academic exchange with Napier University, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I am a senior lecturer and teaching fellow in the School of Life Sciences,
Napier University. Having been teaching at Napier for nine years now, I
would like the opportunity to experience teaching (and possibly research) in
a different institution. I believe such an experience would enrich my
teaching and scholarship back in Napier, and would provide a similarly
enriching experience for my exchange colleague. My areas of teaching
responsibility are population and community ecology and evolution, and my
research interests are particularly in marine ecology, environmental
sustainability and ethics, mangrove ecology and effective teaching.

I am seeking a suitably qualified colleague interested in swapping houses
and teaching for a relatively brief time (ideally one academic semester, or
about 3.5 months but I am open to discussion). I would provide a house
with four bedrooms in the seaside town of Dunbar, outside Edinburgh, and
would need reciprocal accommodation for my partner, two children and myself.
I would be happy to take on any teaching in the broad areas of ecology,
resource management, environmental ethics and evolution, and would need you
to do the same for my teaching. I would also be interested in collaborative
research on teaching (including comparing our two teaching environments).

If you are at all interested in this please get in touch this is a
preliminary enquiry so I have no fixed times or dates, but am rather just
exploring the possibility.

Best wishes

Mark Huxham

Re-Imagining Research Education: the 2004 QPR Conference

The 6th Quality in Postgraduate Research Conference will be held in
Adelaide, at the Stamford Grand Hotel, Glenelg, from 22-23 April 2004, with
the theme Re-Imagining Research Education.

The Early Bird Registration deadline has been extended to 12 March to allow
delegates to review the program before registering. By Friday 5 March, the
Abstracts for individual Symposia, Papers and Posters will be posted on the
conference website at http://www.canberra.edu.au/celts/QPR2004/ The
Conference Program and an online Registration facility are already available
on this web site. The proceedings of the previous five Quality in
Postgraduate Research Conferences, 1994-2002, are also available.

The conference will feature two keynote speakers with highly relevant ideas
on the conference theme, Dr Janet Metcalf and Professor Doug McEachern, and
a range of symposia to encourage extensive discussion.

Dr Metcalf is Director of the UK GRAD Programme, which assists universities
to integrate transferable skills development into research degree
programmes. Her keynote address is ³Re-imagining outcomes for research
education: a national, cross-disciplinary focus on students?²

Professor McEachern was recently Executive Director of the ARC in the areas
of Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences and is currently
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Western
Australia. His keynote address is ³Postgraduate research re-imagined: A
balance between the pursuit of excellence and the real-world needs of
students².

Symposia titles will include:

 Identifying and implementing graduate qualities

 Strategies to enhance timely completion

 Developing publishing skills

 Assessment in research education

The program will also include a wide range of presentations on issues such
as:

 Research writing

 Tracking candidature outcomes

 Research culture

 Supervisor development

 Student-supervisor relationships

We are looking forward to welcoming a wide range of people to Adelaide to
take part in this conference: supervisors and students, academic and
professional developers, postgraduate coordinators and administrators, as
well as representatives from research councils and government agencies. The
conference provides an excellent opportunity for academic staff,
particularly postgraduate coordinators and experienced supervisors, to
debate the latest policies affecting postgraduate education; to exchange
views on current research and good practice in the field; and to hear about
the latest research on postgraduate education.
