Dear List Members
I would like to welcome to the list all those who are new HERDSA members.
Many of you became members by attending the Adelaide conference. One of the
outcomes of membership is that you are automatically subscribed to the
weekly email News which is sent out on Wednesdays. The news contains
information about the society, notes about forthcoming seminars and
conferences in higher education and details of vacant positions in higher
education. The list is moderated by Roger Landbeck and items for inclusion
in the News should be sent to him at Landbeck at ozemail.com.au The list is
distributed from a server at the Australian National University in Canberra.
You can find out more including access to past postings by going to
http://mailman.anu.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/herdsa where you can easily
unsubscribe yourself if you wish. The reason it takes nearly two months for
you to start receiving the News is because of the considerable amount of
work in the HERDSA office following the conference.
Many of you who receive this list are not members of HERDSA and we are happy
to offer you this information service. However we would encourage you to
consider some of the benefits of becoming a member. You will receive the
internationally refereed journal, HERD, four times a year, the Newsletter,
HERDSA News, three times a year and the valuable experience of the annual
conference. This is a great opportunity to meet colleagues in higher
education. In addition you will be able to register for a HERDSA Fellowship,
which is a valuable recognition of a person's professional life in higher
education. So we would encourage you to consider becoming a member which you
can do online through the web site www.herdsa.org.au

Having welcomed new members to the weekly eNewsletter it so happens that
this week I have received only one item which came from Izabel Soliman, the
Co-Editor of HERD, which is HERDSA's international, refereed journal.
Are you interested in reviewing scholarly and research based articles on
issues in Higher Education? If so, then the editors of HERDSA's Higher
Education Research & Development would welcome hearing from.
Just email your contact details and areas of expertise to Dr. Izabel
Soliman, Co-Editor of HERD, email: isoliman at une.edu.au.

Then just to give you something else to read this week I have provided a
link to an article in the Australian Higher Education Supplement which has
already generated a number of on-line comments. Some of you might wish to
join in.
UNIVERSITIES should get funding to recruit poor students from struggling
schools, according to Professor Richard James of Melbourne University's
Centre for the Study of Higher Education.
The federal Government should finance a scheme, which would specifically
target the sandstone universities, where the proportion of students enrolled
from disadvantaged backgrounds is falling.
