Public Lecture this coming Friday, 15th August.

GIRLS have got IT

The role of Females in the Information Technology Industry

Public Lecture and Expert Panel Discussion:  

When:        At 3pm - 5pm on 15th   August, 2008

Where:       Edith Cowan University, Mt Lawley Campus, 2 Bradford Street, Mt
Lawley

Building 17:  Lecture Theatre 17.157

This public lecture and panel discussion will act as a forum to discuss
strategies to improve the participation of females in the IT industry. The
recruitment and retention of female students into IT faculty courses and the
IT industry is important for continued viability and success of the IT
industry as a whole. The event will bring together women from education,
industry and academia to discuss strategies to improve female IT student
participation.  

Guest Speakers

Carla Romero:  Computing Research Association, USA

The public lecture is being conducted in conjunction with the visit of Carla
Romero from the Computer Research Association in America.  As Director of
Programs at CRA, Carla is involved with the broad range of programs focusing
on human resources, on community-building, and on connecting CRA with the
other organizations advancing science and engineering. She supports several
CRA committees such as the Committee on the Status of Women in Computing
Research (CRA-W), Coalition to Diversity Computing (CDC), the IT Deans
Group, and others.

Valerie Maxville:  Australian Computer Society

Ms Valerie Maxville from ACS will present findings from a national survey of
women in the IT industry and the role that women play in its success.
Valerie Maxville is active member of the local ICT industry, as a Executive
Committee member of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the Institute
for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Valerie is also the chair of
the ICT Industry Collaboration Centre in WA.

Expert Panel

A panel discussion is organised after the public lecture.  Reflections will
be sought from female IT students, IT faculty education specialists and IT
industry representatives.

A NEW FEATURE IN HERDSA NEWS

We are trialling a new feature in HERDSA News which opens the possibility of
interacting on line to an article in the News and we invite you to
participate. The first article, `HOW TO get students to turn off their
mobile phones' appeared in the Dec 2007 issue of HERDSA News. The second one
is explained below and will appear in the Sept issue of the News. 

HOW TO... defuse a classroom terrorist

Do you have ideas for dealing with emotional outbursts in the classroom? How
to. is a series that looks at the contemporary challenges in academic
practice that face university teachers and we would like your suggestions on
what to do when an aggressive student takes over the class. Post your
comments on the HERDSA News web site at http://herdsanews.wordpress.com/ A
summary of what we can do to address this modern challenge will be published
in the next issue of HERDSA News. You can even suggest your own modern
dilemma of academic practice by emailing Peter.Kandlbinder at uts.edu.au and
outlining an incident or situation for which you would like some answers.

PhD SCHOLARSHIP

The Centre for the Study of Research Training & Impact (SORTI) at the
University of Newcastle, Australia is offering a PhD scholarship to commence
before the end of second semester 2008. The successful applicant will work
on an ARC Discovery Project with Chief Investigators Prof Allyson Holbrook
and Prof Sid Bourke.

The scholarship offered is for $30,000 pa for three years.

The project will develop assessment criteria and reporting practices to
maximise consistency and meaningfulness in deciding and reporting thesis
outcomes for PhD and research masters theses. The successful applicant will
gain experience of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches
within a mixed methods design.
