FORTHCOMING CONFERENCES
1) 2008 Action Learning, Action Research Association (ALARA) National
Conference
Canberra Institute of Technology, September 11 and 12.
It is with pleasure that we invite you to attend the 2008 Action Learning
Action Research Australian (ALARA) National Conference, September 11-12 at
the Canberra Institute of Technology.
ALARA is the world's oldest professional association for Action Researchers
and Action Learners. Established on 1991 we have hosted seven World
Congresses and many national and regional events to support practitioners
and advance the action research and action learning fields both locally and
globally.
This year's conference is presented in an exciting partnership with the
Centre for Educational Excellence at the Canberra Institute of Technology.
The theme is "the Whole Person: sustainable futures in living, learning and
working". We will be exploring the impact of economic rationalism and the
emergence of concepts of sustainability in reference to issues such as
health, education, environment and governance. We will be using action
learning, action research and related methodologies (eg: collaborative
inquiry, appreciative inquiry) to do so and also considering the impact of
these ideas on current action research and learning practices.
We invite you to consider:
. Registering as an attendee
. Volunteering to take on the role of "Provocateur"
. Submitting a "Catalyst Paper"
The conference will be unconventional, using highly participatory forms of
interaction, self-organisation and collaborative knowledge generation. This
approach offers a unique and very timely experiential opportunity for
delegates (both novice and mature) to learn and practice action learning and
research at the event.
Please find a downloadable copy of the conference brochure including the
registration form and a sample catalyst paper at our public home web site:
http://www.alara.net.au/public/home
We greatly look forward to the possibility of seeing you there

2)
2008 Vario Health Conference, 1-2 Dec, 2008, Perth, Western Australia.
Dear Colleague,
During the past three decades we have experienced an epidemic of chronic
diseases which are predominantly a result of our lifestyle choices
exacerbated by an aging population demographic. Health problems such as
cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer and osteoporosis
continue to plague our population despite the remarkable advances of medical
science.
Today non-communicable diseases cause almost three quarters of global
deaths, and this figure continues to rise dramatically with the ageing
population, increasing levels of obesity, declining rates of physical
activity and inappropriate nutrition. Governments are unable to meet the
growing social and economic demands for support and care. Collaborative
research focused on the development of more effective preventative health
promotion and wellness management strategies has become an issue of
considerable contemporary significance.
Join with us to discuss these issues at the 2008 Vario Health Conference.
The closing date for abstracts is 31st August, 2008. The main conference
theme is: Physical and Mental Wellness - Integrative Approaches to Health
and subthemes are:
Nutrition and how it relates to physical and mental wellbeing
Exercise and how it relates to physical and mental wellbeing
The interaction of physical and mental health
The role of the Professional in the holistic management of health
Strategies for prevention and management of depression
Strategies for prevention and management of dementia
Visit the conference website to lodge your abstract or to register for the
conference.
