SRHE Annual Conference, 8-10 December 2009

SRHE Postgraduate & Newer Researchers’ Conference, 7 December 2009

Newport, South Wales, UK

-Abstract submissions

Dear Colleagues,

May I just remind you that the deadline for the submission of Abstracts for
the SRHE Conference taking place on 8-10 December 2009 is Friday 24 July
2009.

The conference has already attracted a great deal of interest and range of
submissions. We have very stimulating keynote speakers attending to present
a breadth of challenging perspectives and once again an excellent spread of
social and other networking events, this time all under one roof at the
Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales, UK. This super venue offers us excellent
space and a variety of venues for our various events.

This year we are planning the programme with a very particular concern to
provide all accepted authors with an acceptable length of time to present
their work and for discussion, whether this is in individual presentations,
group discussions, symposia or poster sessions.

The deadline for abstract submissions for the Postgraduate and Newer
Researchers Conference (PGNR) on 7 December is Monday 17 August 2009.

You will find all the information you need about these events, and about
paper submission requirements and registration for both conferences at the
SRHE Conference website-details below.
http://www.srhe.ac.uk/conference2009/index.asp

On the last day of submission for SRHE conferences there is always huge
traffic on the website could make your own process slower than normal, so we
do encourage you to try and avoid this by getting your submissions in as
soon as possible before the deadline.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the conferences this year and with
such a super venue secured we hope that you will be encouraged to make SRHE
Conference a priority in what we fully recognise are difficult financial
times for everyone in Higher Education. Despite having improved the quality
of our conference location considerably this year we have held our
conference rates very close to our 2008 rates, within £10/£15 max on
packages in the majority of cases.

If you have any queries at all please email the SRHE office on the
srheconferenceteam at srhe.ac.uk email address.
All best wishes

Helen Perkins

UNESCO held its second World Conference on Higher Education in Paris last
week. The biggest event on the global higher education calendar since the
first world conference in 1998, the four-day meeting attracted 1,200
delegates from 150 countries. They debated current and future issues in
higher education in the areas of social responsibility, access, equity and
quality, internationalisation, regionalisation and globalisation, and
learning, research and innovation. There was also a special focus on Africa.

States finally agree on World Conference communiqué
David Jobbins, Yojana Sharma and Karen MacGregor
After long behind-the-scenes political skirmishes, 150 governments attending
the UNESCO World Conference unanimously adopted a communiqué acknowledging
higher education as a ‘public good’ and calling on countries not to stop
investing in the sector during the global economic crisis, among calls for
action on other issues.
