Subject: David J. Bederman
I pass along the sad news of the passing of David J. Bederman, K. H. Gyr
Professor of Private International Law at Emory Law School, on Sunday, December
4, following a lengthy illness. David was 50.
During his 20 years at Emory, David taught courses in legal history,
international law, admiralty, international institutions, law of international
common spaces, and customary law, wining Emory’s highest teaching awards along
the way. He recently chaired a panel at the American Society for Legal
History’s annual meeting in Atlanta.
Among his 12 books are “The Classical Foundations of the American
Constitution,” “International Law in Antiquity,” and “Custom as a Source of
Law,” from Cambridge University Press.
In addition to holding the K.H. Gyr Chair, David also served as an Associated
Faculty Member of Emory’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Prior to
joining the faculty at Emory Law, David practiced in Washington, D.C., with
Covington & Burling and worked as a legal advisor at the Iran-U.S. Claims
Tribunal at The Hague, The Netherlands.
