<div>Position Overview<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>
The ANU College of Law seeks to appoint a Research Associate or Research Fellow to work alongside the Principal Investigator, A/Professor Don Anton, on a research project looking at deep seabed mining by developing States in the South Pacific, funded under
the AusAID Development Research Awards Scheme (ADRAS). </div>

<div>The project aims to test the truth of fundamental questions, including i) whether developing States in the South Pacific can capture a significant proportion of the total benefits of mining through benefit-sharing or contractual arrangements; ii) whether
any benefits that are so captured will flow back so as to raise the general welfare and living standards within the State; and iii) and whether deep seabed mining can be carried out in an ecologically sustainable manner. </div>

<div>In this role you will be have a number of research responsibilities, including the preparation of regular research reports. You will also have the opportunity to undertake independent, guided research related to the project with a view to publication in
your own name. </div>

<div>The project funder, AusAID, seeks to build capacity in the South Pacific and applications are encouraged form qualified individuals from this region. </div>

PURPOSE STATEMENT</i>: </div>

<div>A Level A Research Academic is expected to contribute towards the research effort of the institution and to develop his/her research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research. </div>

<div>A Level B Academic (Research Intensive) is expected to contribute towards the research effort of the ANU College of Law generally and, in particular, to develop his/her research expertise through the pursuit of defined research projects and related tasks
assigned by the Principle Investigator, and to carry out independent and/or team research within the field. </div>

<div>POSITION DIMENSIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS: </div>

<div>The Research Associate/Research Fellow will be located in the ANU College of Law, one of Australia’s leading centres of legal research that provides a supportive and vibrant intellectual environment. The Research Associate/Research Fellow will be a valued
member of that community and will participate fully in the social and academic life of the College and the University. </div>

<div>ROLE STATEMENT: </div>

<div>Specific duties required of a level A Academic may include: </div>

<div>•<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The conduct of research under limited supervision or, where appropriate, independently, and contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research; </div>
<div>•<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise; </div>
<div>•<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Some administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic; </div>
<div>•<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Attendance at meetings associated with research; </div>
<div>•<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Comply with all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those relating to work health and safety and equal opportunity; and</div>

<div>1.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>A Bachelor’s degree in Law, preferably with first class honours, is essential. A further qualification in law or experience in advanced research in law will be highly regarded. </div>
<div>2.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Demonstrated ability to undertake advanced research in law with minimal supervision. </div>
<div>3.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to develop positive relationships with colleagues at all levels. </div>
<div>4.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context. </div>
