Having seen this from a few sides now, all I'm saying
is that the misunderstanding of net folks by media
folks is pretty well matched by the misunderstanding
of media folks by net folks.
After reading Tom's post, it seemed to me there were
some simple and effective steps one could take. As it
turns out, the ACS had taken them, and got no results.
Hence the escalation in rhetoric and action by the
ACS.
Given that journalists who half-understand the net
have to get stories about it up over the indifference
of editors who don't understand it at all, I can
see why porn, violence and fraud feature pretty
heavily in the coverage. And those stories have made
the net a household word. More heat than light,
but at least there's some light. And the rest of
the good folks on link who want to shed even more
light on these issues in their respective institutional
contexts can do so in an environment in which the
*existence* of the net has at least been raised.
