If Australia is soon to become a part of the corporate empire of Mr Gates
then it may do well to consider some of the conditions under which he
recruits.
I don't know if this can be scaled up to country size or even applied to
politicians. Either way, it would likely not put too much strain on the
coffers at Microsoft.

The Usability Group at Microsoft is looking for 3-4 interns for about
four-month internships (starting Jan, May, and Sept) .
We provide research and evaluation for
product teams during all phases of the product development process.
Our studies involve both field and lab studies, from gathering design
ideas to iterative testing during the development phase. We're looking for
undergraduate or graduate students who have training in human-computer
interaction issues, research design, data collection, and data
analysis from the fields of psychology, sociology, anthropology and
industrial engineering. Interns work under the direction of a manager
but have considerable responsibility and flexibility in conducting their
projects.
Microsoft provides many benefits through its intern program. This is a brief
summary. Interns are paid for their work and receive $250/mth toward health
insurance premiums. Relocation costs (either by air or car) are reimbursed.
The company reimburses up to $250 of shipping costs (each way)
of personal items. If desired Microsoft will provide subsidized,
fully-furnished housing ($500/mth single, $400/mth double).
If flying, interns are provided a rental car for 4 days.
During the internship Microsoft will reimburse bus tickets fully or
provide 20% towards a shared rental car.
Interns may purchase up to $350 of software at the employee
discount price, and all interns receive a free membership at PRO Racquet and
Health Club for the duration of their stay. Microsoft also provides
assistance in obtaining employment authorization as required.
Interested students can send their resume and a cover letter describing how
an internship at Microsoft will complement their educational program to:
