Vanity domain naming may seem redundant, but it provides a memorable
address for a particular segment of information on the network. You're
correct that the com.au domain should contain only "coms", ie the names of
commercial entities.
So why not solve this problem by adding to the heirarchy - mag.au, prod.au,
service.au etc. The structure has been expanded to give associations their
own place in the world (asn.au), why not individuals, products, services,
publications etc?
Of course, this may be way out of line with conventional naming and usage
standards. I don't profess to know much about that. However, I can see
that the domain name and URL structure are being used by everyone as
pointers to all sorts of objects the wide ranging information structure.
Why not expand the current naming structure to accommodate the variety of
its entities.
