Australian AltaVista Mirror bugs me...

As a matter of protest, I avoid the local mirror.  I find it slower than
Altavista US, and have trouble understanding why a local mirror would be of
that much benefit.  As I understand it, Telstra spend literally days
mirroring gigabytes of data from Altavista in the states.

I shudder to think what this does to the bandwidth across the Pacific - I'm
sure it would add up to many times the bandwidth used by requests to
AltaVista US from Australia...
