AUUG roadshow Tutorial on AUSCERT

AUUG will be hosting a roadshow throughout the middle two weeks of November
with Danny Smith, Operational Manager of AUSCERT, who will be presenting,
"The Unix Security Update". Following is some information regarding the
content, please forward and encourage your local chapter members to attend.

ABOUT THE TUTORIAL
__________________
This tutorial will be presented by Danny Smith, Operational Manager of
AUSCERT. It offers a unique blend of topics opening with more formal
aspects of computer security and applying those aspects to day-to-day
issues, followed by a more practical approach to some solutions to
computer security vulnerabilities.
The formal presentation covers the following issues:
* Security in General
Introduction to basic security concepts
* Changing Nature of Security Incidents
Latest trends in Incidents faced by many sites
* Security Policies
The nature and role of the security policy
* Authentication
Authentication schemes - their strengths and weaknesses
* System Administration Tools
Some of the more useful tools for systems administrators
* Checking for Intruders
Some of the common signs of intruder activity
* Responding to a Security Incident
Effective incident reponse
Following this, an examination of the typical configuration of a
strengthened Unix system and network will be undertaken, with detailed
explanations of the reasons and goals of each action. Audience
participation during this segment is encouraged.
Finally, the tutorial will conclude with a Discussion and Question segment,
where any issues raised by the audience can be examined in more detail.
This session is always lively and covers a wide range of important issues.
Again, audience participation is strongly encouraged.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
____________________
Danny Smith is the Operational Manager with the Australian Computer
Emergency Response Team (AUSCERT), and has been with the organisation since
its inception in 1993. With a Masters degree majoring in Data Security, a
Post Graduate Diploma majoring in Advanced Networking, and a Bachelors
degree majoring in Computer Science, Danny has over 13 years computing
experience, and has been involved with data and network security since
1985.
AUSCERT provides a single trusted source of security information to assist
sites in reducing the number and impact of security incidents, and assists
in the coordination of incident related information to provide faster and
more effective incident resolution.
