As far as I can recall AARnet provided the service for all of Australia when
the Remote Printing Experiment (as it was quaintly called) started. This
lasted only a few days, which was reasonable given the cost of STD calls.
The service was then provided just for Canberra by AARnet and I assume was
then inherited by Telstra.
I noticed it wasn't working about two weeks ago. The service is still
available in Sydney, but I don't think Telstra was the provider there.
This was a very useful service and an interesting social experiment. I was
surprised it worked so well for so long. Perhaps another ISP would like to
volunteer to provide the service in Canberra?
ps: This was the sort of valuable pioneering work which AARnet people did,
with little reward and recognition. Lets put Geoff Huston in for an OA. :-)
