by Jim Strom, Manchester Metropolitan University
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Manchester, like many leading cities is implementing a high bandwidth
optical fibre communications infrastructure to support the roll-out of
advanced telematics and broadband services for education, business and city
communities.
G-Ming, an ATM-based Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) has been set up as a
high performance multi-service telecommunications infrastructure for the
Greater Manchester educational community. Jim Strom, Applications
Development Director for the G-MING program, will present on the development
of G-MING and discuss the goals and initiatives of the project. He will
give an overview of the expansion program to include student residences,
libraries, teaching hospitals, business and civic sites.
Jim is also project manager of the Manchester INFOCITIES program, part of an
initiative on the EU's program for Trans-European Networks for
Telecommunications (TEN-Telecoms), which is addressing the development of
'city information highways' on a trans-European basis. As part of a
collaboration across eight European cities, Manchester is developing visual
databases and virtual environments linked to museums, education and public
