I don't know who this guy is,
or where he comes from, but he made a lot of sense to me...
I just happened on this in a completely unrealted newsgroup.
It's an excessive crosspost, which is a bit naughty, but the
article subject header sucked me in!
How many reckon this guy is ranting, and how many of you agree
How accurate are his figures?
I'm still upset at how this govt. looks like giving all it's
business away to one software vendor, which while not outsourcing
is sorcery of a different kind...

Multinationals are systematically destroying Australia's Information
In 1984 an employee of the then Sperry Computer Company was indicted in the
US for corruption. His defense was that it was company policy to buy
business. Our Australian governments are in the world of big business where
there are billion dollar deals and companies willing to buy these deals. Is
Mr. Howard intending to retire as a multi-millionaire like Hawke and
The Howard government has given control of hundreds of billions in
government computer equipment and control of $7 billion a year of government
spending on computer equipment to only selected foreign multinationals. They
have called it outsourcing. Further the Howard Government plans to
subsidize big mostly foreign multinationals by giving then $21 billion a
year in grants and hundreds of billions of dollars a year in orders. Why do
our own smaller local companies miss out?
This business activity with our government must be justified, the
· Foreign investment is good for Australia. Bringing in and subsidizing
multinationals and giving them all the government business drives Australian
companies out of business. Orders drives industry, no orders for Australian
companies means NO Australian Industry.
· Multinationals employ Australians too. Motorola is taking 600 of the best
programmers from local NSW companies. Each programmer keeps many people
employed selling and servicing products. When these companies go broke many
more Australians lose their jobs. Local companies use local resources.
There is a net loss of jobs and job opportunities for Australians.
· Multinationals are funding the development of Australian industry. The
Partnership for Development Scheme of Hawke's justified giving the
multinationals all the government business because the multinationals had
agreed to spend a percentage of their profit developing industries in
Australia. Australia now imports 20 times more Information Technology
products than it exports. The multinationals make hollow promises.
· Multinationals are going to fund Software Engineering Centers The stated
purposes are that these centers will help train and develop local software
companies. State Governments must give multinationals lots of orders else
the multinationals are not interested. This keeps local companies down.
Over the years there have been many other justifications like the "Multi
Function Polis", making "Queensland the Silicon Valley of Australia",
Software research centers, Semiconductor Labs etc.
Why does the government insist on purchasing policies that favor
multinationals over Australian owned companies? Why does our government give
such big subsidies to the foreign multinationals? How can Australian
Industry be expected to develop if Australian companies' access to
government orders is restricted? Why does our government subsidize big
multinationals to smother Australian Companies and our Industry thus keeping
Australian industry weak and poor?
