Imap is indeed a sensible solution.
You won't lose any mail with imap since it handles mail quite differently
than a Pop server.
Security is only a problem where sites are not running the latest
versions. The older imap daemons suffer from buffer overrun exploits.
It's the same security risk as with any service.
PINE 4.x comes with a secure imap daemon.
