The OECD and the Government of Canada held a Ministerial Conference on
electronic commerce in Ottawa on 7-9 October 1998. This Conference brought
together Ministers of OECD Member countries, private sector and labour
representatives, industry leaders, heads of international organisations and
representatives of non-member countries. The Conference addressed a number
of key issues surrounding the evolution of electronic commerce, including
taxation, authentication, privacy and consumer protection. It also
developed a set of measures to promote electronic commerce on a global
basis.
Mr Greg Wood, Australian High Commissioner to Canada, was head of the
Australian national delegation and represented Senator Richard Alston.
Australia had a large contingent at the Conference, with over 25 delegates.
The Australian delegation was comprised of a State Ministers, senior
Commonwealth and State officials, and national leaders in industry and
consumer protection.
Australian national priorities were well represented at this Conference,
consistent with our positions and obligations in other international
consortium, including APEC.
NOIE will shortly provide a more comprehensive overview of the Conference
and its implications for Australia on our website at http://www.noie.gov.au
