there are lots of ifs-and-buts to backwards compatibility in Microsoft Office.
With freelance contributors, press releases and a couple of flavours of laptops
to deal with, I see heaps of wierd permutations.

EG:
Office 97 to Office 95
With Word converter, no problem in text. If embedded images exist, they get
scrambled. I think it's because many users create their embedded images in
PowerPoint.

Win 98 to Win 95 (with reader)
Just painful. Some docs will translate, others won't. Partly, it seems to depend
on document size. Some simply crash the target machine, which is somewhat
anti-social.

Word for Mac OS as e-mail attachment to Win 95/98
Sometimes impossible. Total scramble frequent. The same document will survive
Eudora but not cc:Mail. Embedded pics a nightmare.

Now, it's probably true that if I spent some time on serious research, I could
find and install sufficient converters to solve all the problems. But why should
I?

As it happens, my default translator is now StarOffice, which doesn't seem to
care what format the document started as. Haven't tried it with W2k docs yet,
but whereas to deal with life in Office I've had to find, download, install and
curse several translators, S/O generally gets the document open first time.

I dont believe that is true craig. word2000 is perfectly readable in both
word97 and word95 with the word97 converter, I did it the other day.
