[LINK] ACT broadband to go ahead

If (a privatised) TransAct were to become the "monopoly" provider of
bandwidth across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), then I wonder
whether we would see ubiquitous and affordable bandwidth. On the
other hand, if there were competitive supply of bandwidth end-users
may see affordable access and usage charges.
A competitive strategy by Telstra and other carriage service providers
that saw the roll-out of competitive broadband technologies - xDSL,
LMDS, satellite, etc. - across the ACT might well lead to ubiquitous
and truly affordable bandwidth for its residences and small
businesses. What an exciting prospect!

We can only hope that this project provides a high quality precedent
for
bandwidth access around the country that is not tied to particular
content providers and that it is available at a reasonable price.
Did I see Telstra advertising $49/month for cable Internet this month?
