ABC queried over ads on website

By MELISSA FYFE and JASON KOUTSOUKIS
Thursday 17 February 2000

The ABC's ability to protect its Internet content against commercial
interests was thrown into doubt yesterday after it was revealed that a
shares website has surrounded news generated by the national broadcaster
with advertising.

<snip>

A spokesman for the ABC said yesterday: "There is no advertising allowed
around any content." But Ms Julianne Schultz, the ABC's corporate strategy
manager, said last night the corporation allowed advertising around
indexes. She admitted the ABC may have to review how much information is
allowed on an "index" site.

Ha, bloody ha! An index site isn't content!?!?!

As Stewart Fist said in his excellent article "Little by little, the ABC
dies" in Tuesday's OZ - do it incrementally.
