INTERNET EXECUTIVES ARE REASSURED AFTER WHITE HOUSE MEETING
The government should not use the hacking attacks that downed
several major Web sites last week as an excuse to increase
regulation of the Internet industry, several top industry
executives told President Clinton during a meeting on Web
terrorism that was held yesterday. The meeting, attended by
about two dozen industry officials, had been planned for months.
Harris N. Miller, president of the Information Technology
Association of America, used the forum to call on private
industry to meet the challenge of Internet security head-on.
During the meeting, White House officials bent over backwards to
assure industry officials that no new regulations were
forthcoming. "[The Internet] is the dynamic engine that is
driving our economy today and we must keep that open," Secretary
of Commerce William H. Daley told the press. Last week's attacks
should be considered "part of the price of the success of the
Internet," Clinton said. (New York Times, 16 Feb 2000)
