CRITICS FIND FLAWS IN WINDOWS 2000
As Microsoft prepares to release Windows 2000 on Thursday,
skeptics are raising doubts about the quality of the product and
whether companies will adopt it. Gartner Group estimates that a
fourth of corporate adopters will have compatibility problems
between Windows 2000 and existing applications, and suggests that
customers delay migration until the first service pack is
released in June. Meanwhile, Dell CEO Michael Dell says Windows
2000 adoption might be hindered by the growth of Linux. In
addition, Novell claims it has discovered a security glitch in
Windows 2000, although Microsoft denies the flaw. These concerns
are critical to Microsoft, which is depending on Windows 2000 as
a way to capitalize on Web-based computing. With computing
increasingly moving online and away from the PC, Microsoft needs
to establish its OS on the Internet. Microsoft dismisses
concerns about Windows 2000, noting that over 20,000 customers
are already using the OS and have given positive feedback.
