ONLINE SCHOOLKIDS SEARCH, PLAY ALL DAY
A new study conducted by N2H2, a Seattle-based maker of filtering
software that is used in nearly 2,000 schools, discovered a mere
100 Web sites capture half of the traffic generated by
individuals using the Internet at school. The company used its
own tracking technology to monitor the Internet habits of 350,000
students in 43 major cities, determining that 2,000 sites, most
of which contain commercial, entertainment, or search-related
content, receive 80 percent of school Web traffic. Jim
O'Halloran of N2H2 says the findings raise questions about
whether children spend more class time engaged in Internet fun
and games than in completing schoolwork, but notes that his
company is "just starting to work with the data." Cheryl
Williams, the director of technology programs for the National
School Boards Association, cautions that the data are not
specific enough to allow any definite conclusions to be drawn
about the educational element of Internet use in schools.
