EL CHEAPO BID FOR IRIDIUM
Castle Harlan, a US investment firm, has offered $50 million for the
Iridium satellite telephone venture, which spent an estimated $5 billion
to put 66 satellites into orbit before going bust. (No wonder - its clunky
satphones cost $3,000 each and calls were $7 a minute). Lead investor
Motorola has been keeping the satellites up in the hope of finding a buyer,
and said today it will continue to do so for one more month.
