GOVERNMENT SERVICES SLOW TO GO ONLINE
E-government services are emerging slowly, even in countries that
lead the high-tech sector, according to a recent survey by
Anderson Consulting. Although the U.S., Australia, Canada, and
Singapore are pioneering the e-government shift, these nations
have not surpassed 20 percent "maturity" in providing online
government services, the survey says. Among the factors
inhibiting e-government growth are privacy concerns as well as
legislators' lack of understanding of e-commerce. Less than 50
percent of the U.S. government's published services are available
on the Internet, the survey says. France is leading the way with
interactive services, with a third of such services available
online. By contrast, the U.S. has only offers only 8.3 percent
of its interactive services online. The current pace of
e-government activity suggests that the U.S. government will not
meet its goal of offering 500 essential services on the Internet
by October. (Financial Times, 5 June 2000)
